We live in a remarkably juvenile media environment. It's really incredible sometimes how difficult it is to get some idea of what's actually going on in this world given what it's easy to know. Although I don't often listen to NPR, I probably should have listened today just to avoid Right radio's obsession with portraying itself as above the idiocy of TV news. Now I've heard the lipstick on a pig story spun about six different ways. I won't belabor the point.
Apparently elsewhere the Dow did a great bit of rollercoasting. I haven't heard much intelligence about exactly what it means that the Feds have purchased those Freddies and Fannies. I expect however that I'll get a good rundown in the Economist next ish.
What's a Hadron Anyway?
Success of the LHC means that it didn't destroy the planet. But are there any Large Hadrons anywhere? I mean how long does this damnable thing have to eat Europe's Gigawatts before it produces evidence of some infinitesimal mote of matter? Or is it anti-matter? What does it really matter? I can't figure. I mean I love the idea that there are people out there brilliant enough to engineer this most complex machine on the planet, but it's not really usable or explicable by more than 5,000 of us. Even stories about orgies at Hef's are more useful in that though only a very very few get in, at least the rest of us can reasonably imagine what's going on, and have some degraded approximation of the event in our own homes. Hmm. Maybe if I put some aluminum foil in the microwave...
I think I'll try to change the news cycle by announcing that I am hoping that the McCain camp asks one especially idiotic question: Why can't Obama stop smoking? Nobody cares what he did in high school, he's a smoker now. What if he drops dead of lung cancer and we're left with Biden running the country? OK if they don't ask that maybe this; How is it that the Democrats say they are for change, but their candidates are East Coast lawyers? It's very hard to predict the stupid questions, but we might as well try our best to generate more.
