- He didn't kill anybody, he shouldn't get the death penalty.
- He was tried in open court, the government completely stepped on it's own feet, and he still got life.
- It took too damn long.
- American jurors are not stupid.
Let me also say something. The more American judges who get to try these cases, the better we get at developing a community of prosecutors and judges who start to understand the seriousness of the global threat. I am 2/3rds of the way to saying that the intelligence services ought to get another deck of cards out for the top AQ hierarchs and save some of their secret tribunals for them. The rest should be 'accidently' shot in the field or brought to the midwest so ordinary American courts can put them through the crushing wheels of justice. But I'm not saying all that, just 66% of that.
Let me put it this way. If the CIA has secret prisons, and what self respecting spying agency doesn't, they should spend their energy decieving the judicial branch in ernest. That way there are no Gitmos.
Let me add one more thing. I find it very difficult to put up with a stunning lack of.. how shall I say.. terror in the minds of our enemies. A whole lot of Americans are going to watch United 93, and we're not going to be afraid of these guys any longer. We're going to want to get our hands on them and throttle them ourselves. Just like Mike Tyson, these guys can only be frightening for so long. Don't they know what we are capable of? So if the CIA has to leak some intel about a nefarious plot, please leak one about a plot thwarted by the intrepid corps at Homeland Security against the terrorists. Not this arrogant petty political crap pulled by Mary McCarthy. The American public hungers to hear about the prosecution of the war - we have the bloodlust, except that Asshat-Americans are pointing the fingers at us and satiating it at the wrong enemy. Heaven forbid some liberal wanker paint blood on a Taliban soldier's door. We know you won't fight "Bush's War", but you obviously are spoiling for a fight. Americans are spoiling for a fight, so let us hear something worth fighting for.
Anyway, let's get efficient about this. One down, 30,000 to go.
