It's at times like these when Libertarians and Independents have their greatest halos. What a halo is or what it is worth in politics may not add up to much, but it is more than Republicans have these days.
We heard that Karl Rove (as of this moment still unindicted) was going to take a turn and come up with new strategies for the Party a couple weeks ago. And today we are witnesses the utter desperation of the Republican political situation in trying to re-energize the base. Gay Marriage Amendment? Are you kidding me? Obviously they didn't hear us the first time.
I am thinking about this in the context of the three races that are so critical at this juncture. Lynn Swann, Michael Steele and Ken Blackwell. At the moment when the Party is desparate for traction chances are that two of these gents could go down in flames, perhaps all three, but I think Blackwell has got a lock. Still, with this being the time that the Republican leadership is fumbling around around on its hands and knees looking for its heart and soul, the success or failure of these three black candidates is going to make a serious dent in the party one way or another. None of them are Christian Right candidates, they all very mainstream Old School and they each are perfectly representative of guys like me. I say guys like me ought to be the future of the GOP so here is a make or break moment. And really, that's just about all I care about the Party today - are guys like me gaining ground or not?
The President is and always has been domestically clueless. He demonstrates all the grace and charisma of a crippled crab. It's painful and pathetic to watch the GOP scuttle sideways. And so let me say it now plainly. It's time for Karl Rove's head.
In retrospect, all of the most odious Republicans I've had issues with over the years have gotten the boot. Tom DeLay, full of himself, the strongarm is gone. I've heard that Doug Feith is the stupidest most powerful man in history. He's gone. Ashcroft turned out to be not nearly as slippery as I suspected he might be and left office with the Bill of Rights intact. That leaves only Karl Rove, master of untraceable dirty tricks, cobbler of unthinkable coalitions and myrmidon of Fundamentalist pieholes everywhere.
Give him the boot, George.
