Once upon a time in America, the phrase 'long hot summer' meant basically one thing. Blackfolks getting crazy out of hand because of their grievances. You don't hear that phrase any longer. 'Black leaders' don't use it as a threat. White liberals don't fear it. Conservatives don't dig in against it. It doesn't happen any longer.
I'm not going to go into any histrionics about it or the significance of it. I'm quite satisfied with the simple explanation. African Americans are middle class, and middle class folks don't 'take it to the streets'.
