Those people who have contributed in the past to Vision Circle are, in my estimation, the finest thinkers present in the blogosphere on black politics and culture. They represent, in the best way, black progressive thought. Now that the Vision Circle group blog has been in hiatus for some time, I am thinking about rebirthing it as new webtools become available.
Specifically, Google is offering domain hosting of mail and calendar. These are powerful tools for communication.
Here's what I'm thinking. Imagine a national hookup. A calendar or set of calendars that enables every potential cultural and political event of significance to black communities posted in one place, at Vision Circle. If it were sponsored by all of the top black bloggers in the 'sphere, it could be rather cool.
Like everything else of this nature, it will only work if it is powered by the user community. I know that the political and cultural calendar is wanted, but the question is how to kick start such a beast. If we start with personal ads, then we could get numbers, but that won't be our real target (or would it). So basically, I'm thinking about the prospects for this kind of service - national free email, and calendar for black culture, politics and crtical debate.
I think that having 1000 folks in one domain would be a very worthwhile goal, with people on the ground in all of the major metros contributing to the calendar. Slammin.
What do you think?
