New dollar coins are coming out today. Whooha! I love it.
I've been digging on dollar coins for about 6 months now. I always did like them, but something happened that made me start using them on the regular. Now I'm a big fan. I basically went to the hand car wash to buff up the Transporter, and put in a 20 by accident. I got 20 golden dollars. I only needed 5 to do the wash, I put the rest in my armrest-tray in the car. Not long after that, I found myself at the drive through at Carl's Jr. I had a five in my pocket which I wrestled out with some difficulty at the driveup window and I paid the rest with the coins. When I got home, the magic trifecta imprinted the usefulness on my head. I paid my daughter's allowance with the gleaming discs.
Since then I go out of my way, OK well just to that same car wash, every week to load up on the coins. I buy 40 at a time, and now I'm finding them in all the usual places. In my backpack, in my desk tray at home, in the car. It's a real treat, and they are actually a lot more convenient than dollars especially to have in the car. You just have to make a conscious effort to use them and you'll find them useful.
I have to say that the novelty hasn't worn off, and I find myself kinda upset when I find vending machines that don't accept them. I'm always using them at Starbucks and they're really great for tipping. The idea of having all of the presidents in fairly rapid succession, like the state quarters, is a great idea and we'll surely get the kids to collecting them. It would be nice if there was a short middle-school level 20 page book available for each president that cost a buck or two. That is if we really want to be educational about all this. Even without that, I'm sticking with the coins. I lose a lot fewer coins than bills to my wife and kids in the washing machine.
