So Grandmaster Flash is now in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Good. But.
As Halls of Fame go, I can't say that I have a favorite. But I can say that the architecture of the Football Hall and the Rock Hall are both troublesomely wack. What were they thinking? So if for no other reason that there exists the possibility that in the future there might be a very cool building somewhere in America, I'm down for a Hiphop Hall of Fame.
First of all, there's no question that it should be located in NYC. I haven't been near Fordham Road & Grand Concourse recently enough to suggest a South Bronx location, but the idea of having it just off the campus of Fordham U is appealing. But who are we kidding? It's gonna be in Brooklyn. I'd say put it in that parking lot in front of BAM. That's walking distance from both Brooklyn Moon and the 2,3,4,5,B,Q, D,M,N and R. That oughta get plenty Japanese tourists.
We could (and will) debate who goes into the Hall for years, but I'm actually more interested in how such a place would look and who would design it. What is the Hiphop Aesthetic for buildings? This is a very cool question that I'd like some feedback on because it's something I don't think has been asked.
My first instinct is for brick, but I also know that there's got to be a huge Wild Style mural on the building. So I'm thinking long and low and part of it underground, of course that would be hard to do at that particular Brooklyn location. Then I'm thinking that the place needs to look like a club, but what was the greatest Hiphop club of all time? The LQ? The Garage? Paradise 24?
Hmm.
