Rudy makes it clear:
" Mayor Giuliani believes marriage is between one man and one woman. Domestic partnerships are the appropriate way to ensure that people are treated fairly," the Giuliani campaign said in a written response to a question from the Sun. "In this specific case the law states same sex civil unions are the equivalent of marriage and recognizes same sex unions from outside states. This goes too far and Mayor Giuliani does not support it."
The New York Sun calls it a 'startling departure' but in fact Giuliani is exactly where I think he should be. He expects no equivalence between civil unions and gay marriage. He is right on the money. There is no reason to deny homosexuals any civil rights, but there is also no reason to suggest that such arrangements are equivalent to what the state recognizes as marriage.
I am personally glad that this is clarified. It gives me a lot more confidence that Giuliani's position in this matter is nuanced and appropriate. I believe that this position will be broadly acceptable to Republicans and many conservatives. It is not anti-gay and it is a defense of marriage. That's what America needs.
