I did find an extroardinary document which relates directly to the reasonableness of the sentence recieved by Shaquanda Cotton from Judge Chuck Superville. Apparently she's not so unusual. Read the whole thing of course.

Here are some interesting tidbits:
- An estimated 24% of the 370,000 sampled defendants in juvenile courts in the Nation's 75 largest counties from 1990, 1992 and 1994 were referred for violent offenses, 46% for property offenses, about 18% for public order offenses, and 13% for drug-related offenses.
- More than half (55%) of the juvenile defendants formally processed in juvenile courts in the Nation's 75 largest counties were adjudicated delinquent .
- Among juvenile defendants adjudicated delinquent, 40% received a disposition of residential placement and 50% received formal probation.
Of juveniles sentenced to prison for violent offenses
7% were sentenced to 2 years or less
43% from 2+ to 6
26% from 6+ to 10
22% >10, 2% get Life
I can't tell if that 'prison' includes juvenile residential placement or if that only applies to juveniles who are tried as adults. Anyway. I think that the statistics show that Superville was not out of bounds. As Slick Rick might say, this type of shit happens every day.
