I'm about to do something that I haven't done in years. I'm going to add an existential partner. The curse/honor goes to E. C. Hopkins who is a regular commenter here at Cobb and also the brilliant mind behind the new blog Maxambit. An existential partner is somebody who in some very touching way echoes a part of my mind so closely that I could see myself being him or him being me given a certain twist of fate or circumstances. But it might be more fair to say that they are, in many ways, the black writers that I want to be.
Right now I have a half-dozen EPs. It's interesting to note that they are not all personal friends although I'm sure they would be if we knew each other in ways other than reading and writing. I do have personal friends who are not existential partners - it's a tougher cut.
The rest you may know. They are Lester Spence, George Kelly, Bomani Jones and Jimi Izrael.
