The aphorism I would coin is that the unintended consequence of zero tolerance is inevitably extinction. That is because, as Jeff Goldblum said in Jurassic Park, life always finds a way.
Those who don't find a way to deal with change and adaptability are doomed to suffer in a world that throws curveballs, spitballs and floogleballs every day. Never heard of a floogleball? My point exactly. In my backyard, these kids were forced to remove the weapons from toy soldiers because the school has a zero-tolerance policy for weapons, even and perhaps especially toy weapons. Smart kid that he was Austin Nakata realized that he'd have to cut the hands off of his soldiers to separate them from their rifles. And so they are bloodied and bandaged. Smart kid.
