Deet, Doc, Dutz and I were all together in town tonight and the subject went to movies. We've decided that we're going to grab a laptop, a DLP, some powered speakers and a handball court and throw up some old hilarious new age blaxploitation films. And so like Emmett of the Unblinking Eye, we came up with a list of campy black films that would just keep us busting a gut.
Since I'm me, I only remember my suggestions which were as follows:
CB4
If only for Chris Rock's 'big ass biscuit' scene.Def By Temptation
Without Kadeem Hardison, it really can't be complete.Fear of a Black Hat
Without question, this is the most sophisticatedly funny black film ever made. Nothing else even comes close. Well, maybe...Tales from the Hood
Just classic. When this film broke, I was sure we were on the verge of a new wave of young black cinema. It could've happened.Sprung
Although I enjoyed flicks like 'A Thin Line Between Love and Hate' and was glad it came out - In fact I think it was a rather landmark romantic comedy - I'm so glad that this one didn't take itself so seriously.Boomerang
Just has to be there to round out the series, although it's not as campy as the others. It was still hilarious, and probably the very last time Eddie Murphy was funny and good looking in a film.White Men Can't Jump
Is really a film that I have to believe will hold up over time although I've only seen it once.
Strictly Business, Booty Call, Coming to America
Maybe.Friday
Most definitely.and finally, the most underrated and hilarious campy black comedy of the 80s and 90s:
I've Got The Hookup
It's enough to make you think twice about my generation.
