Once upon a time, there was a joint called Moe Ginsburg. No mo'.
I was just Yelping and thinking about filling in some more information about favorites and quite frankly there aren't many places I've been that excite me when it comes to shopping. Maybe I'm getting old and crusty, but .. there isn't much of a thrill in acquiring bourgeois goods for me. But I do like getting a deal, and when it comes to getting a deal, there were few such dealers as Moe Ginsburg.
I got a dark blue suit at Moe Ginsburg which was the first incarnation of the Hollywood Suit, which has done me solid through the years when I needed to look particularly slick. Combined with a sweet pair of wingtips that I purchased from Haig & Haig in Midtown NY, my Hollywood suit did its duty. Since I consider myself a blended player (the best looking of the smart people or the smartest of the good looking people / the most pointy haired of the tech people or the techiest of the suits ), every once in a while I had to do a complete makeover to effect the proper impression with the proper folks. This is why I like few things as much as suiting up and sitting in architecture discussions that sound as if they should be over my head.
In your 30s, a Moe Ginsburg suit is what you should be wearing, because it indicated that you don't have cash to burn, but you wanted to look the part in NYC, where the shoes you wear mean everything. Growing up in Los Angeles, this was a hard won lesson, but the staff at Moe's made it easy to effect. It would be tremendous to have a Moe Ginsburg out here in LA, but we don't do that stuff any longer. I think it's a shame, despite the fact that I am typing this wearing cargo pants and Sketchers.
These days, it seems like everyone buys and sells 100s. Once upon a time, the staff at Moe's would tell you about threadcounts and why one suit was better than another. They didn't mind taking the time. They loved talking about fabrics and stitching and lining (yes my slacks were lined.. do they even do that any longer?). Ahh memories...
Well, at least Hides in Shape is still around.
