I find it rather astounding that the controversy surrounding Dog, The Bounty Hunter has sustained as much interest as it has. Then again, I read a very specific set of blogs and news sources. My providers may be biased. But it just occurred to me that we are really, really overdue for some anti-PC backlash.
If you're half as old as I am, you probably remember two of the loudest blowhards ever on TV, Morton Downey and Wally George. Wally was one of those TV hosts whose sloganeering patriotism was delivered in a pull no punches, in your face, gutbucket attitude-fest. You could count on Wally and his audience to shout down any pinko they declared a pinko, and it didn't take much to get on Wally's bad side. I happen to think that the bombast of Wally paved the way for a lot of conservative radio. After Wally George, even Rush Limbaugh's 'feminazi' phrase seemed tame. Having graduated to 'El Rushbo', he doesn't need to be so crass.
But somebody needs to.
Like I said yesterday, I'm a huge new fan of Dennis Miller's radio show. As much as I enjoyed his TV show, especially in the beginning, I enjoy his radio show even better. He's a smarter, (yes), more refined and sensible person, and at the age of 54 he is beyond making a fool out of himself for a laugh. He acts like a Dad, which makes him doubly aces in my book. Dennis is not disrespectful nor phony and he doesn't have a raucous studio audience to cheer him on for the cheap laugh. In that way he is a much better host than either Bill Maher or Jon Stewart. Dennis is more of a class act than he ever was. He's not the Ghost of Wally George. I don't know who is, but he's coming.
The time is just about ripe for somebody to rip all the PC pantywaists a new one. The way I react to Miller shows me that there are a lot of people who are a lot less sophisticated who feel the same way. It's going to be a more cultural show. I happen to know the young people who will dig it. I work with some of them. Good people who aren't all in to politics but who enjoy a good smoke, a good drink, who aren't necessarily afraid of meat or loud music, who occasionally say shit that's uncomfortably true and really don't have much patience for a lot of politically correct bullshit.
Mark my words. Somebody like..hmmm. maybe Eddie Griffin.. is going to say something entirely reasonable like, who give's a rat's ass about blank, and a bunch of Lefties who are over 35 are going to hit the roof, and young people are going to say WTF and it will be on. Paris Hilton and all similar celebrity ho-bags will be disapperated by this new star of the Gen X Right. Maybe it will be somebody like Travis Pestrana. Maybe it will be somebody like Puck from the original Real World. Maybe somebody like Paul Jr from the American Chopper show. Or perhaps it might even be Dog The Bounty Hunter himself.
Already Nas has said he doesn't need to give a rat's about the N word. He's straight capitalizing, so we know the sentiment is out there that says to hell with PC, we're keeping it real. But Nas is only in the spotlight periodically. I'm talking about doing something like giving somebody like that a talk show. And I'm not talking about somebody who is counter-cultural. I'm talking about somebody relatively clean who has about as many vices as John Cougar Mellencamp, which is to say enough to show that they're not Mitt Romney and can actually sport a leather jacket without trying. Somebody cool. Somebody extreme. Somebody with working class and middle class appeal.
Mark my words. Somebody young and angry is going to become a media star by giving PC a boot to the head on the regular.
