The economics of healthcare insurance and medical care are very confusing to me, and I think to most Americans. We know what we can get and what we pay, but when it comes to being smart shoppers, we're probably not. There are a lot of things to consider.
1. I think we should all consider the high cost of catastrophic health care. It is an outrage to me that we are spending billions to save people with heretofore incurable diseases and not spending much on universal pre-natal care. It's reasonable for the average American to live to be 80, but not if the average 30 year old isn't healthy.
2. Following on my opening point, what should it cost to fix a broken arm? Does anyone have any idea? Where is the price list and coverage? It's easier to fix my car than to fix my body, not because my body is any more complicated, but because I know a good mechanic when I see one, and I can comparison shop. Why can't I pick any doctor I want? Any hospital I want and do comparison shopping. It shouldn't cost me more to save money.
3. There should be a basic, basic plan. Take the top 50 things that happen to people who actually *do* get sick and cover that. Broken arms, pneumonia, flu, immunizations, pre-natal, etc. and guarantee service for that. How hard can that be?
I'm going to go back to Dr. Lou's recommendations as we discuss this.
