What you don't see is this picture of a black man in his mid forties wearing black boots, an olive green duster and a porkpie hat flying around in circles in a mosh pit. It's on film somewhere and some forensics might be able to identify that man as me.
I forgot what it's like to need that physical need to throw oneself into the flow but I remembered it all last night. I got a good workout which was exactly what I needed. The Fishbone show was old school and I'm sure I looked as ridiculously right on time as George Clinton. Cholly. Alcoholic. Lying Ass Bitch. Party At Ground Zero. Beergut. Hide Behind My Glasses. Ma and Pa. Everyday Sunshine. Bonin In The Boneyard. Let Dem Hos Fight.
Fishbone is, without question in my mind, one of the greatest rock bands of all time. It is also without question that if I were to be a rocker, I would be like Angelo - he is a balls out performer and the only man in the world who rocks with a theremin. The energy at Fishbone concerts is awesome, and this was no exception. The Key Club in Hollywood, where the above video was filmed, was thumping until one in the AM. I left sweaty.
If you've never heard or seen Fishbone, you're in luck that two of their best songs, Servitude & Fight the Youth are up on YouTube. I have this rolling debate between myself and Shay Riley about who's better between the 'bone and Living Colour. I can understand why women generally stay away from the Fishbone concerts, though there were plenty enough last night to fill the stage on an extended bump and grind version of Hide Behind My Glasses. Fishbone is red hot. Still.
