Rolling Stones? Whatever. The Eagles? Yawn. Return to Forever? WHAT!?
I would say that Return to Forever is without question electric jazz's number one supergroup, and that it would have to be among the top ten jazz groups of all time. The fact that they are coming back after 25 years makes me realize how old I am.
It was when I was just out of high school when I started listening to jazz on my own which wasn't just a contact high from Pops' collection. Stanley Clarke's Modern Man was, after Joe Sample's Carmel, the very second jazz album I ever purchased. Yeah I did some Tom Scott, and even Deodato, but when I heard Clarke's bombast, I was hooked. It wasn't until 1982 that I actually discovered Return to Forever. And from the very first listen, The Romantic Warrior became my constant companion. I wore a hole in that tape. In fact, I joined a fitness club and timed my workouts to that song.
This tour is so awesome that I'm even considering going to see it in a city other than LA, just to get an intimate setting. But I see that they're offering a VIP package which I'll probably get. Any one of these guys is worth a concert, but to have them all on the stage at once is incredible and tremendous. As a matter of fact, I'm just going to get all my LA buds together and make a huge party out of this thing. I'm digging this to the most ut.
