I've wanted eBooks for a long time. Amazon has been hyping the Kindle for a while. I don't think it's going to fly. There are three very good reasons.
- It's ugly as hell. It looks like a plastic adirondack chair accessory.
- Feature for feature it's expensive. And it's ugly.
- Who needs ebooks when you have podcasts? Besides, if Apple makes one it would be beautiful.
I'll stick with Audible.com. The last thing I need is another expensive device that I have to keep an eye on. The chances that I leave the thing in a plane seat pocket is high. If it has all my books on it, I'm going to freak.
My current thinking on personal computing follows my own geek sensibility - which is to say what is it that I want? What I want is redundancy because everything breaks. I expect that Amazon would keep track of all the books I own but that's not quite good enough. Remember client-server people. This client is ugly. Laptops win.
