This picture resonates very very deeply with me. It is something that I've been influenced by, as a concept for just about all of my adult life. It is the picture of a beautiful young black woman in the backseat of an expensive and powerful automobile. It may sound strange, I know.
The original time I was gobsmacked by the concept was one Sunday I was driving down Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles. I was heading northbound and stopped at the light at Slauson. Stevie Wonder's 'That Girl' was playing on the radio and I was in a great mood, thinking about 'that girl' whom in my life I had yet to meet. On my left, in the left turn lane a young woman drove up in a new Volvo sedan. She was the very image of black upper middle class life, and in the back seat of her car was her daughter, both in their Sunday best. I could see her wedding ring from my vantage point and it was clear that she was heading towards View Park or Ladera, the Hill. The image was burned into my psyche. I wanted to be that husband.
Now that I have the Transporter and it still manages to remain somewhat stylish, though I'd rather have my Hummer, especially during these bleak days, I must remind myself to take that picture with my daughters.
