you presume the worst of american citizens because they waste money and disrespect the constitution, but at least we've had money and constitutional rule. there's half a planet out there who have had neither and are hostile to the very ideas. and guess what, we're at war with them. our failure needs correction, theirs needs instruction. except they refuse our authority.
i don't know which is worse. the stentorian schoolmarm who holds the keys to the treasure but so disrespects her students that she raises their contempt for it; or the vital brute who destroys the keys without any consideration for the treasure at all.
i think the theories about decentralized power are all well and good, and would be worthwhile if you could kindly point out which state is surviving the sexual revolution and the global depression quite independently. perhaps we could all retire to that state we know al-qaeda won't attack. pray tell me is it red or blue? are gays married there or not?
our problem, it seems to me, is that as you have alluded to, we have a culture which is lacking some discipline and possibly even respect for the basics of our civilization. it seems to me that we cannot go piecemeal into the future. nor can we, in returning to our strengths go about experimenting with our values.
it is my firm opinion that every countercultural experiment of the baby boom generation has outlived its usefulness, and those experimental and radical poses are becoming ossified into the worse practices of american life. feminism, as part of that sexual revolution, has done all the good it can do and feminist oppositional poses are corrosive of civil society. american women have turned a blind eye to the manners which sustained our families, because they experiment with frothy brand new gender roles cranked out of a post-modernist industry. yet we tolerate it all. everybody listens to oprah, but nobody wants to be oprah. we have subjugated medicine and the health of our girls to the dictates of feminist ideology and distribute contraception technology instead of moral instruction in our public schools.
