I touched an iPad today. It wasn't a big deal.
I navigated to the NYTimes app and it didn't work. It painted into a box the size of an iPhone in the middle of the screen, and it was a total dud. Neither that nor the vaunted email application were impressive. I watched that new TV show 'Modern Family' with the lame episode about the lame father and his lame family buying an iPad for his lame birthday. At the end, he sat curled up on the sofa touching it. And now something is beginning to dawn on me, especially now that I just read this excerpt from another Day One review:
To be honest, I haven’t spent much time creating content — instead I have been consuming content voraciously. I have downloaded about 25 apps so far and most of them are oriented around reading, watching and entertainment. The vivid colors of the gorgeous 9.7-inch screen do actually make a lot of difference and make consuming content more enjoyable.
The iPad is as big as the internet. But the internet doesn't make people read Shakespeare. The iPad instead, will make lame content interesting, because you can touch it.
It's going to be a while before some really interesting applications come out for this device. But the lames will make it commercially viable for a good long time. Watch them consume, with cool, conspicuously.
