It turns out that there is a system of European style Social Democrat heath care provision that I find attractive. It's something that can be described in under fifty words, none of which has been within my earshot. But since I reckon that it can also called 'single payer' there hasn't been much of an incentive for me to hear folks out on that score.
The German system consists of eight competing national non-profit health care firms that operate everywhere and compete for patients. You can choose any firm you like. You can change any time you like. You can mix and match. The government pays. There *is* no health care insurance, there are simply the eight firms and they provide.
