In the news:
The U.N. Security Council and the Secretary-General have expressed their strong condemnation of an attack on a U.N. compound in northern Afghanistan on Friday that killed seven staff members.
Several hundred demonstrators had gathered outside the U.N. compound in Mazar-e-Sharif to protest the burning of the Muslim holy book - "the Quran"- by a pastor in the U.S. State of Florida 10 days ago.
U.N. Peacekeeping Chief Alain Le Roy briefed the council on details of the attack, which he received from the U.N.’s top diplomat in Afghanistan, Staffan de Mistura, who went immediately to Mazar-e-Sharif to oversee the investigation.
"There was an important demonstration, and part of the demonstrators rushed into our compound with weapons; and they stormed the compound, they put fire on it and they killed several of our staff."
There is nowhere in my world, outside of openly declared mortal combat that such behavior is acceptable. As this underscores what I believe to be true of the 'Arab Street', that not only are they peasants, but that they are superstitious, illiterate peasants. Some of the worst kind. If the UN is to survive as an intstitution, it's going to have to remember that cultural relativism doesn't work. Which sort of Western democracies will serve to remind them? Ours?
