I just got off the phone with my daughter who is a freshman at SJSU. She's fine and on her way to kickboxing class. She was in her English class on the 4th floor of Sweeney Hall earlier this morning when they noticed someone knocking at the door. After about 10 minutes they opened the unlocked door and it was a police officer 'with a huge gun' who deadpanned that there was a gunman in the building. They escorted students out of the building. My daughter noticed that all the cops seemed to be on the 4th floor which is the top floor of Sweeney. They were led out to the Student Union where they locked down.
She never heard shots fired. As of 10:30 she's off to another class.
This is the second time one of my kids was on campus lockdown while police searched for fugitives. Earlier this year it was my son's school in Fullerton. At Fullerton the hunt was for several suspects and took half the day as they searched the whole campus. This morning it was confined to one building, perhaps just one floor of that building.
Obviously there's a difference between a man with a gun, a gunman and an active shooter. I watched a bit of panic on Twitter, but nobody reported hearing shots. This is another incident where I believe people's fear of guns, and of each other will get blown out of proportion. It's also another instance where I will encourage my kids to be as calm and knowledgable as they can, like the police officers who run towards the threat.
