Is there a Left or Liberal or Progressive principle involving the desirability of altered consciousness, a la Timothy Leary, in support of the decriminalization of some drugs, or is it rather a question of liberty? In clean slate, blue sky world, suppose you had a list of 400 mind-altering substances to license or ban for human consumption. Would it depend upon the pharmacological effect, the popularity of the drug, the tradition of use, the safety, the price, the pleasure principle?
OTOH, if it was about liberty, and we freed and repaired every drug convict, would the current bans still be supported? Just curious.
