There's no authoritarianism in America.
There is only the aggregated noise of ethical acrimony between the politicized halves of the upper middle class. It doesn't reverberate with the rich and powerful elites of America who are doing just fine, thank you. They don't give a shit and don't want to. The rank and file revel in their own bullshit and occasionally will rise to the sound of a completely predictable drummer whose thesis statement we learned freshman year. Finally there are the disciplined and manifold government employees and arms of law enforcement who work for shambling agencies under inconsistent leadership. Their sad jobs must go on, for they must represent the crooked letter of the law, now finally beginning to approximate the insecure spirit of America.
Party like it's 1969.
Progressives have had their way completely and feel almost no need for the US Constitution's original intent, or logical defense of their emotional stances. Conservatives have jawboned their way into shrill doctrine that the electorate has marginalized into irrelevance, except for reverence of the troops. These are the primal forces at work.
Meanwhile commercial America is making apps for that, a Krell machine of the instantiation of will that will make those forces dominate all public discussion until we literally and figuratively have no Discovery Channel. And Americans will, as they always have, manage to remain better off than 90% of the world's population, so nobody will care to interpret the meanings of the shitstain patterns of our beds.
There is no authoritarianism in America because we all have not decided yet what to tell each other to do. We have a good sense of what that is, but our insecurity is not quite complete enough so that we've formulated Commandments. So we await the coming of the absolutist movement whose dictates the Krell machine will automatically dignify and amplify. Today we say Thou Shalt Not Smoke, unless it's weed or tobacco with the appropriate tax stamp. Today we are not sure. Tomorrow, you will know.
